August in Rancho Mirage has always been the quiet month. Snowbirds are gone, dining rooms thin out, and a good table opens up without a reservation. This year the quiet is doing double duty. The city's annual Taste of Summer promotion is running as usual, but it is landing on top of a genuine reshuffle: a new signature restaurant at Omni Rancho Las Palmas, a Disney-built town center about to open across town, and a long-vacant Highway 111 fine-dining pad finally moving into construction. If you already live here, the next four months are worth paying attention to, because the map of where locals eat is about to look different than it has in a decade.
The Taste of Summer window is a locals' event, not a tourist one
Taste of Summer runs from Thursday, July 23, through August 16, and the whole structure of the program is built around the fact that visitors are not here. The 2026 edition brings together approximately 30 local restaurants and 40 nonprofit organizations for a community-wide dining event, and the exchange is straightforward. Nonprofits sell $10 wristbands. Wristband holders get restaurant discounts. Restaurants get bodies in seats during their slowest four weeks. Money moves through the community rather than out of it.
There is a second lever most residents miss. Beginning July 22, the Rancho Mirage Shop Local Program is offering a 50% bonus on all cards purchased during Taste of Summer. Buy a $100 Shop Local gift card during the window and it functions as $150 at participating merchants. Stacked against a wristband discount at the same restaurant, that is real money, and it is the kind of subsidy that never travels outside the 92270 ZIP code.
"This is a fun way for the community to win because they get to visit their favorite restaurants or try new ones, nonprofits win because they're raising some much-needed money, but it just feels like a fun community food fest for everyone," said Katie Slimko-Tuvell, president and CEO of the Rancho Mirage Chamber of Commerce.
Where the wristband actually pays off
The 2026 restaurant roster leans on the reliable rotation of Rancho Mirage rooms plus a few of this year's newer additions. A sample of what wristband holders get:
- California Bistro on Highway 111: 20% off all a la carte dining with beverage, available all day Thursday through Sunday.
- Maracas on Dinah Shore Drive: 15% off the total bill, alcohol not included.
- Joyce's Sushi on Bob Hope Drive: 20% off entrees, alcohol not included.
- Ben & Jerry's at The River: a regular scoop of Black Raspberry Fudge Chunk in a homemade dipped waffle cone for $4.95.
- Double Date at the Omni: a free cup of coffee with breakfast, and a choice of house wine or dessert with lunch and dinner for wristband holders.
The last one is worth pausing on, because Double Date is not just another line on the list.
Double Date is the summer's most consequential opening
The Omni Rancho Las Palmas replaced its longtime dining concept this spring with something that is trying, credibly, to matter to residents rather than to conference guests. Double Date is the resort's new dining experience by executive chef Jose Lopez, a member of the Omni family for almost 30 years. The framing is California-meets-Italy, and the naming leans hard into the region's agricultural identity.
"Double Date is inspired by the Coachella Valley's reputation as the 'date capital of the world,' home to many local date farms that play an important role in the region's agricultural heritage," the resort's director of food and beverage, Thomas Shewmake, has explained. The kitchen builds sauces and pastas in-house. Double Date is open daily for dinner from 5 to 10 p.m., and live entertainment is offered five nights a week in the plaza, from Wednesday to Sunday.
For anyone who lives within a short drive of Bob Hope Drive, the practical read is this: the Omni is trying to reposition itself as a restaurant destination, not just a hotel amenity. The Taste of Summer discount is essentially a test drive. If Double Date sticks, it will be one of the few full-service dining rooms in Rancho Mirage that keeps a serious kitchen running through the shoulder seasons.
What arrives in the fall changes the map
The larger reset is happening on the other side of town. Anticipated to open fall 2026, the town center known as Cotino Bay Beach, Dining and Shops will welcome residents and visitors with premier dining, shopping and entertainment experiences at the first Storyliving by Disney community in Rancho Mirage. The residential half of Cotino has generated most of the coverage, but the piece that touches everyone else in the city is the public-access town center.
The first-phase tenant list has been confirmed. Here is what is coming and, more usefully, at what scale:
| Tenant | Concept | Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elevare | Waterfront American, Cotino Bay views | 8,000 sf | Operated by Oak View Group, designed by Ignisio Studios |
| Artigiano | Specialty coffee, European-style café | 3,000 sf | First U.S. location of the Canadian coffee brand |
| On the Mark Fine Foods & Provisions | Specialty market, wine, sandwiches | 3,700 sf | Second location; more than twice the size of the Palm Springs original |
| Khaga Yoga | Yoga studio and boutique | 2,000 sf | Family sessions and retail |
Two of these are worth reading closely. On the Mark Fine Foods & Provisions is a popular Palm Springs specialty market opening a second location at Cotino, offering artisan goods, wines, craft beers, and made-to-order sandwiches. The owners have said the goal is a full sit-down component the original location does not have, plus produce and meat counters. For anyone who currently drives to Palm Springs for that kind of shopping, the trip is about to get shorter. Artigiano is the more speculative bet. A Canadian coffee brand's first American café is either going to become a fixture of the morning routine along the north end of Bob Hope Drive or it is going to be a curiosity that struggles once the opening novelty fades. Either way, it is not a Starbucks and it is not another local roaster, and that thin slice of the market is currently underserved in this corner of the valley.
Access to the beach itself remains a paid ticket for non-residents. The dining and shops are open to the public without a fee, and that is the piece that will pull traffic away from The River and Rancho Las Palmas Shopping Center on weekends beginning in the fall.
And the Highway 111 pad that finally has activity
One more piece of the map is worth watching. Project plans have been uncovered for a possible outpost of The Capital Grille coming to Rancho Mirage at 71959 CA-111, with more than a dozen construction documents filed so far. The project is in the construction bidding phase and involves converting an existing building to accommodate a 9,260-square-foot full-service fine dining restaurant with an occupancy limit of 316 guests and a seat count of 275. The site previously housed Roy's Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine, which closed in 2021, and in the years following, rumors swirled about a Beer Hunter expansion there that never materialized. Parent company Darden has declined to confirm the project.
The Capital Grille is a chain, and a chain opening does not usually count as news. What it signals is that a national fine-dining operator has looked at the 275-seat math on this stretch of Highway 111 and decided the numbers work. That is a data point about how the corridor is trending, and it is worth remembering the next time someone tells you the desert dining scene peaks in February.
What to actually do with this
For the next two weeks, the wristband is the highest-leverage tool in your dining budget. Buy it from a nonprofit you would have donated to anyway, stack it against a Shop Local gift card bonus, and use it at Double Date at least once before the promotion ends August 16. In the fall, watch the Cotino opening dates carefully. The first weeks of any new town center are the only time you get a table at a waterfront restaurant without a wait, and after that the calculus resets for everyone.
